My Writing Process

I sit down and stare at my computer screen until words pop into my head.

Kidding. Here’s what actually happens…

  1. I open Dictionary.com, my outline, and my Word document.
  2. I turn on some music to drown out the real world. [my Youtube playlists]
  3. I scroll through Twitter and Facebook.
  4. If I find something on either website that interests me, I will read and like/share it.
  5. I read through the last chapter I wrote and review my outline.
  6. I play a movie in my mind and write what I see and feel through the characters.
  7. If I get stuck on a word or want to think of a better word, I’ll use the dictionary/thesaurus.
  8. My brain is tired, so I check Twitter and Facebook again.
  9. One hour later, I get hungry and grab a snack.
  10. Now I feel refreshed and ready for round 2. I read through what I wrote earlier and pick up where I left off.
  11. Oops, I’ve been disturbed by a member of my family. I pause my music.
  12. One hour later, I turn my music back on and check my email.
  13. I then check the sales I’ve made on KDP and feel sad, until I tell myself that if I just keep writing things will work themselves out.
  14. I read through what I’ve already written a second time. Okay, this is gonna be good.
  15. I am about to start writing when I get interrupted again. Dinner time.
  16. Three hours later, I return to my computer. Now I am really ready to go!
  17. I write as much as I can until my eyes burst into flames.
  18. I read through what I’ve written and edit any glaring errors.
  19. I copy it into two separate documents and save all of them.
  20. I print the latest chapter for my mother to read.
  21. If she decides to read it right away, I keep my files open to edit if needed and check my social media again.
  22. Now my eyes are liquid fire. Ouch. I turn the brightness down on my computer screen.
  23. My mom gives me feedback, and I make corrections and reprint.
  24. I close everything on my computer and check my phone for notifications.
  25. I think about what I’ve written while I try to sleep. Then I think about cats. Stress about life. Dream about cake.

There it is. My writing process revealed in painstaking detail for the world to see. And you best believe that this is exactly what I am going to do as soon as this post is published… after I check Twitter and Facebook again. Maybe there’s a new Youtube video to watch… I just got a new email! Oh, it’s an ad. 😦 I’ll refresh Twitter… nothin’. Should I post something? Do I have any original thoughts? Nah. *writes novel instead*

  1. Oh, my. I love your freshness of honesty! This week, my process hasn’t been different, except I ditched the novel for the entire week! 😬 instead I tried my hand at short stories and discovered I like them (and other things about my writing style). Even managed to submit them…it was a nice sense of accomplishment after 10 months of novel writing and I’m only half way through. Yikes.

My daughter gets my reads, and she texts back changes and opinions. Great help.

I, thankfully, don’t do YouTube much and have no Facebook. I know, right?! Since starting my blog here, I do tend to visit the read and see what everyone is up to…and find gems like this one.

Have you noticed you snack more while writing? I most certainly do!

    • Oh, dear! I know what that’s like! I may try writing short stories as well. 🙂
Wow! No Facebook??? lol I can dream…
I am actually quite the opposite! haha I have to force myself to eat at certain hours of the day, or I forget. Either that, or I get so hungry while writing that I can’t think of anything but food. I used to have more of a snacking habit, but I made changes to my diet this year that have compelled me to quit. What kind of things do you snack on? 🙂

      • Love nuts and dehydrated fruit…but when I’m out of all of that (like now), I’ll snack on anything I can get my hands on, as long as it won’t trigger hot flashes (you’re welcome guys). Probably doesn’t help my writing space is right off the kitchen.

This week I did spend a day with a notebook and pencil and sat outside most of the day and wrote. Kitchen was too far away for snacking. 😂

  2. This is hilariously similar to my own writing process, only my brother gets my stuff to review. A difference being that we then spend a great deal of time arguing over who’s grasp of the English language is better (mine obviously), before coming to the conclusion it’s probably somewhere in between (lies), I then make some corrections and we agree to disagree on the others.

Though I must admit that I have been trying swear off YouTube of late in an effort to increase productivity, endless movie trailers are most certainly not conducive to an active writing schedule. Twitter is the main culprit for me, it’s not like I post a lot either, just spend most of my time laughing at memes…come to think of it I may need to give up Twitter too.

    • At least you still get along well enough to keep giving him your work for review! haha
Yeah, I wish I could give it all up, but in the modern world it’s a necessity if you want to have any success self-publishing (unless there’s some kinda “deal with the devil” I’m missing out on). 😛 Fortunately, I’ve been so excited about my current project that Youtube hasn’t been as much of a distraction. I’m falling behind! I used to be the go-to person for movie news in my family, and now I barely know anything, lol.
The memes, man… I can’t seem to pull away from them, either. 😅
